Windsor and Essex County police sent out a warning last night about slippery conditions on roadways. Thanks to a drop in temperature below zero, several major roads throughout the area iced over as the sun disappeared, leading to several collisions.
Police reported a series of minor collisions throughout the area, as well as several that impacted traffic on major roadways, including:
- Talbot Road at LaPointe Street in Lakeshore
- Eastbound Highway 401 at Todd Lane in LaSalle
- Westbound Highway 401 approaching Merlin Road near Tilbury
- Walker Road at Blackacre Drive
- North Talbot Road near Windsor
- Eastbound EC Row in Windsor between Matchette Road and Malden Road
Other major roadways that were impacted included Ojibway Parkway, Walker Road, Cabana Road and Riverside Drive. Many vehicle also ended up in ditches in Lakeshore along County Road 22. EC Row expressway was reportedly in the worst shape.
All accidents were cleared before midnight except for the Talbot Road accident in Lakeshore. Both drivers in that accident were sent to the hospital, one with life threatening injuries.
Police reported that the accident was a head-on collision between a pick-up truck and a Cadillac that occurred just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The driver of the pick-up truck suffered serious injuries.
Aside from the serious injuries reported in the Talbot Road accident, police reported that several people were taken to hospitals with only minor injuries.
Drivers throughout the area were encouraged to avoid driving if possible and to adjust to winter driving conditions.
