Ontario is experiencing a dramatic increase in deadly motorcycle crashes. In fact, 2024 has been one of the deadliest years for motorcyclists in the past five years. Things have been especially bad in London, as seven riders have died in just two months.
The latest fatality happened on the morning of August 1. A motorcyclist got hit by a pickup truck at the Substation Road and Highway 59 intersection. The 33-year-old rider suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
As of the middle of July, there were 22 fatal motorcycle accidents in Ontario so far this year. In just a couple weeks, this number increased to 34, a 50-percent spike from the previous year’s total of 23 deaths at that point of the year.
If the trend continues, 2024 is going to be one of the deadliest years for riders in several years. There were 42 of these fatalities in 2020 and 44 in 2022.
In London and portions of Southwestern Ontario, there have been a total of 10 fatal motorcycle accidents. At this point in 2023, there was only one such fatality.
These are some of the recent deadly motorcycle accidents:
- Collision with another vehicle at Plover Mills Road and Prospect Hill Road at about 6 p.m. on July 13; the victim was a 30-year-old from London
- Bluewater Highway collision that killed a motorcycle who was 74 years of age; this was near the coast of Lake Huron on the afternoon of July 13
- The rider veered off the road and hit a tree. This happened on Sassafras and Longwoods Roads in the early morning hours of June 23.
- This collision killed two people who were riding a motorcycle near Strathroy. Authorities charged a female driver with careless driving causing death.
- On June 13, 2024, there was a fatal collision at 37th Line and Road 96. This was in an area approximately 10 kilometers southwest of Tavistock.
According to Oxford OPP Constable Randi Crawford, the increase in fatal motorcycle crashes cannot be attributed to just one thing. These accidents are inherently dangerous because motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles.
