We are thrilled to share some exciting news from the legal community in Windsor! Our very own Joanna Sweet, managing partner at Greg Monforton & Partners, has been elected to serve as the President of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) for the 2027-2028 term.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
This prestigious appointment follows a clear progression path within the OTLA leadership. Joanna will first serve as Vice-President starting in May of this year, then advance to President-Elect,
Joanna’s campaign was supported by Greg Monforton, Maria Damiano, and Simona Jellenik, highlighting the high regard in which she is held by her colleagues.
A Champion for the Injured
Since joining Greg Monforton & Partners in 2013, Joanna has built an impressive career as a fierce advocate for victims of personal injuries. Her practice specialises in car accidents, slip and fall injuries, and dog bite attacks. She also represents clients in long-term disability, accident benefits and Canada Pension Plan disability claims, and manages estate litigation cases, but notably never represents insurance companies.
Having grown up in Essex County, Joanna combines her local knowledge of the area with exceptional academic credentials, including a law degree from the University of Windsor (2005) and a doctorate in political science from Carleton University (2012). Her commitment to education continues through her teaching roles at the University of Windsor, where she has taught Constitutional Law and Auto Insurance Law.
A Dedicated Advocate
Joanna’s election to this leadership role reflects her ongoing commitment to legal advocacy. Joanna is passionate about safeguarding the rights of injured individuals through political advocacy. Since joining the OTLA board in 2021, she has been actively involved in making submissions to the Ontario Government.
In 2023, Joanna joined the Executive Committee of the OTLA board and currently chairs the Continuing Legal Education committee. She further serves as co-chair of the Essex Law Association Bench and Bar Committee and maintains memberships with The Advocates’ Society and Canadian Bar Association.
What This Appointment Means for Our Community
For residents of Windsor and Essex County, having a local legal professional in such an influential position means stronger representation of our community’s interests at the provincial level. Joanna’s leadership role will help ensure that the rights of injured people remain protected through thoughtful advocacy and policy development.
