This tragic incident has prompted serious discussions about sports facility safety in our community. Pickleball club members and other local advocates are pushing for essential safety improvements at the centre.

Pickleball Player Collides With Wall, Suffering Fatal Head Injury

The incident occurred when a player hit his head against an unpadded wall during a match whilst attempting to make a shot. Unfortunately, despite undergoing multiple surgeries in hospital, the man died only a few days later.

Patrick Brown, Windsor Pickleball Club president, addressed City Council regarding the urgent need for additional safety measures.

The pickleball community is advocating for comprehensive safety upgrades, including:

  • Installation of protective wall padding
  • New nets
  • Temporary flooring improvements

Pickleball Club Convenor Says Prior Incidents Have Occurred

Club convenor Pamela Knowler emphasizes player safety must be the top priority. She noted that similar incidents, though less severe, have previously occurred. The club regularly advises members about safe play practices, but says implementing additional structural safety measures is essential.

According to a recent article, while the city is currently reviewing cost estimates for these safety enhancements, discussions have been deferred to the 2025 budget talks. The Pickleball Club has offered to contribute to some improvements through grants and funds, provided the city covers the cost of wall padding.
