Windsor Essex in southwestern Ontario has seen a disturbing increase in motorcycle-related deaths in 2024, with five deadly crashes claiming six lives in just the past month. This tragic trend has made 2024 one of the deadliest years for motorcyclists in recent memory.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reports that 22 people have died in motorcycle crashes across the province so far this year. This figure already surpasses the annual totals for the past four years, highlighting fears about an upward trend in motorcycle fatalities.
Recent Motorcycle Fatalities in Windsor
Recent victims include Steve Skelton, a 65-year-old experienced rider from Dorchester, who tragically lost his life in a collision with a passenger vehicle. His sister emphasized that despite Steve’s vast experience and cautious nature, crashes can still happen.
The spike in fatalities is not limited to rural areas. Urban centers, like Windsor, have also witnessed their share of motorcycle-related tragedies. In fact, there have been several deaths reported in recent months.
Improved Training and Awareness Needed for Riders and Drivers
In a recent news article, Wayne Daub, general manager of the Motorcyclists Convention of Canada, expressed concern over the rising number of incidents. He stressed the importance of proper training for riders and increased awareness among other road users. “You have to be aware as a driver of a car that motorcyclists … are considered a vulnerable road user,” Daub stated.
Motorcyclists Not At Fault in More Than Half of Fatal Crashes in the Last Decade
OPP statistics reveal that motorcyclists were not at fault in more than half of all fatal crashes in the last decade. In crashes where motorcyclists were at fault, common factors that contributed included:
- Speeding
- Failing to yield
- Being distracted, inattention to the road
- Loss of control
Alarmingly, alcohol and drugs played a role in nearly a fifth of the deadly crashes involving motorcycles.
OPP Says Most Fatal Motorcycles Crashes Are Preventable
OPP Deputy Commissioner Rohan Thompson emphasized that the majority of these fatalities are preventable. As we move forward, it is clear that both motorcyclists and other road users must work together to improve safety and reduce these tragic incidents on our roads.
