Officials from Ontario Provincial Police have advised that a tractor trailer accident that occurred on Highway 401 just south of St. Thomas near Furnival Road has resulted in the death of the driver, leaving motorists stranded on the highway while first responders attend the scene.
While Elgin County Police are currently investigating the incident, it’s believed that the trailer, which was carrying a shipment of automotive parts, veered onto the centre median and then crashed into a support pillar from the overpass bridge.
In a statement from Police:
The tractor-trailer was completely destroyed in the collision… Diesel fuel from the tractor- trailers ruptured fuels tanks spilled onto both the west bound and east bound lanes of Highway 401.
The force of the collision resulted in the death of the 49-year-old driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are continuing the investigation.
