A female truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday, April 30, when the truck she was driving veered into oncoming traffic before rolling onto its side.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to the scene around 3 p.m. It was determined that the truck was traveling west on Highway 401 near Chatham when it crossed the center median just west of the Bloomfield Road overpass. It then crossed the eastbound lanes and rolled over. It came to a stop in the ditch on the south side of Highway 401.
OPP stated that the driver of the truck was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pinned under the truck.
A witness to the accident who was one of about 15 people who initially attempted to help the victim, noted that it looked as though the mirror had pinned the woman inside the cab of the vehicle. He reported that first responders used the Jaws-of-Life to remove her from the truck and then transported her to a nearby hospital.
A report on Sunday revealed that the woman’s condition had been upgraded to stable condition.
The accident remains under investigation as police work to determine the cause of the crash. OPP stated that charges are pending. They have requested that anyone with information about the accident call 1-888-310-1122.
