One person died and another was critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Lakeshore Friday morning.
Lakeshore OPP responded to the scene of this collision, which occurred between Gracey Side Road and Comber Side Road at about 10:20 a.m. Friday. Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) also responded to the chain reaction crash.
A Second Multi-Vehicle Crash Occurred Minutes Later
According to a news report, a second collision occurred on Highway 401 at 10:38 a.m., just minutes after the initial crash. Police say this second collision involved a pickup truck and two tractor-trailers. Photos of the scene show one of the tractor-trailers was on fire and engulfed in thick, black smoke.
Police, paramedics and firefighters responded to the crash, where they pronounced one of the tractor-trailer drivers was deceased at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. The individual driving the other tractor-trailer was not injured.
Traffic was at a standstill following these two crashes. Highway 401’s westbound lanes were closed at Exit 56 and remained closed, according to police, as of 3 p.m. that same day.
