Earlier this week, we learned of a serious crash that caused heavy damage to a minivan (initially reported as an SUV) and injuries to those involved. Today, we learned more about the victims and the severity of the injuries sustained in that collision.
Two Pedestrians Died, Driver Severely Injured
Two pedestrians died as the result of their injuries in the Walker Road crash on Monday, according to an updated news report. A driver involved in the crash was also severely injured.
After responding to the crash scene, Windsor police closed Walker Road to traffic between Wyandotte Street East and Ottawa Street for approximately five hours, reopening the area to traffic later that evening.
Community Response
Local auto repair workers Younis Hammoud and Joe Piach heard the crash and ran out to see if they could help. They ended up using ladders from their shop to pull a trapped driver from an overturned minivan, successfully extracting a woman through the driver’s door.
Growing Safety Concerns
The severity of this tragic collision reinforces the community’s concerns about safety on Walker Road. Piach highlighted frequent accidents in this high-traffic area, particularly worrying given its close proximity to a high school. Recent road modifications have reportedly led to increased vehicle speeds of up to 80 km/h in the area.
