Sources close to the scene have reported on a Via Rail train accident near Chatham Station that involved an eastbound Via Rail train striking and killing a pedestrian at approximately 10 a.m on Wednesday, February 26th.
While local Police are still investigating the incident, Mylene Belangera spokesperson from Via Rail was quoted as saying:
On behalf of everyone at VIA Rail, let me express my deepest sympathies for those affected, and our deepest continued commitment to the safety of our passengers, our colleagues and all Canadians,
A representative from Chatham-Kent police has also advised that Sass Side Road will be closed for a number of hours while the scene is investigated further, while also asking local motorists to seek alternative routes to help ease traffic congestion.
This incident has added to the recent issues being experienced by rail operators throughout Canada and has further raised concerns regarding the safety of Canada’s rail network.
