Countless products and materials contain asbestos fibres. Those people working in the construction, railroad and shipbuilding industries are at the greatest risk of being harmed by exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos is associated with several life-threatening diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
Our law firm represents Canadians affected by asbestos. We will represent workers exposed to asbestos and their families in lawsuits against asbestos manufacturers. If you would like more information on how our asbestos lawyers can help you, you should contact us immediately.

Asbestos Lawsuits
Asbestos is the only known cause for mesothelioma among workers in Canada. Exposure to asbestos also is responsible for other life threatening conditions, including asbestosis and an increased risk of lung cancer.
The risk of asbestos exposure is not limited to work sites. Asbestos also affects the families of workers, who can transmit asbestos to their homes from asbestos materials on their clothing.
Some of the most common occupations that have or may be affected by asbestos cancer can include:
- Steel and sheet metal workers
- Carpenters
- Brick layers
- Cement finishers
- Lathers
- Machinists
- Plasterers
- Paper mill workers
- Welders
- Roofers
- Railroad workers
- Boat Yard employees
…. among many others.
In spite of overwhelming evidence that asbestos poses a significant risk to people, the asbestos industry continues to promote its product in Canada. Various asbestos companies operating in Canada are lobbying for the continued use of chrysotile, a type of asbestos linked to mesothelioma and lung cancer. Industry claims that chrysotile is safe have been disputed by the Canadian Medical Association and the World Health Organization.
Asbestos Manufacturers Withheld Evidence of Health Risk
Asbestos manufacturers as early as the 1930’s concealed serious health concerns related to asbestos exposure. Information available in the 1930’s suggested that asbestos was associated with serious respiratory problems.
In an effort to discredit adverse information, the asbestos industry funded various scientific studies intended to prove that asbestos was safe. The studies concluded just the opposite asbestos was highly toxic and a carcinogen to humans.
Instead of alerting the public to the risk posed by asbestos, the manufacturers concealed the facts and continued producing asbestos-containing materials at an alarming rate.
Nearly every citizen in Canada will be exposed to asbestos at some point in their life. Asbestos was commonly used in the construction of residences, commercial buildings, and schools.
Fortunately, most people who are exposed to asbestos will not be exposed in high enough levels to become ill. Those people at the greatest risk for getting ill or developing an asbestos-related cancer are workers who are around asbestos on a regular basis.
Common Symptoms of Mesothelioma
While the symptoms of mesothelioma are often quite general and may be a sign of another less serious medical issue, there are some common symptoms that have appeared in previous mesothelioma and asbestos cancer sufferers.
This list often includes:
- Accumulation of fluid between the lining of the lung and chest cavity (pleural effusions)
- Chest pains
- Back pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Coughing up blood
- Hoarseness that will not stop
- Swelling of the arms and face
- Shortness of breath
- Sensory loss
- Nausea
It’s important to note that there are a variety of treatments available which can include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and radical surgery although as with any serious medical condition, it’s wise to discuss any potential options with a skilled, licensed medical practitioner.
